If you need to sell your home during COVID-19, get ahead of the home inspector or potential buyer qualms by having any home problems fixed in advance of listing your home for sale. Taking care of these common issues ahead of listing will help minimize delays, you’ll be much more relaxed during the selling process and feel confident knowing your home is up to snuff from the get-go.


Not much else will put a potential homebuyer off more than mold. If your home has any source of mold, you first need to remove the moisture source. Then you will need a detergent solution to remove the existing mold. Be sure to use gloves and a ventilated mask as a safety precaution. In severe cases, it is best to seek out professional help.

A roof is the most important part of your home to a home insurance company, since it can indicate other issues with the home. A new roof is a great selling feature. If your roof isn’t due to be replaced when you’re ready to sell, make sure that it is in good condition and will pass a home inspection. Signs of a damaged roof include missing or damaged shingles, staining on interior attic ceiling, or sagging.

Old windows are not energy efficient because they let in air and moisture. This does not align with a modern buyer’s preference of saving money while helping the environment. Furthermore, older windows tend to let in more exterior noise, which may not fare well if you live on a noisy street or near an airport. If quality windows were installed in the home previously, you shouldn’t have to replace them for 15 to 20 years.

Poor Functioning HVAC system

Maintaining your HVAC system is important. If you’ve neglected its maintenance or suspect the previous owners did, you may need to replace some or all of it before selling. A home inspector will do a visual inspection to make sure your thermostat, furnace, air conditioner, heat pump and ducts are all functioning correctly. 

Incomplete Renovations 

Not many people want to move into a home where major renovations are not complete. If you have a major room, such as the kitchen or a bathroom, under renovation, always finish the project before listing your home. Even if you think a person may want to finish the project themselves to their liking, you will drastically limit the number of people interested. Plus, by having a move-in ready home, the sale price of your home will likely increase in value more than it will cost you to finish the project.
