Easy Tips for Success: How to Sell Your Home Over the Holidays

December 4, 2019

Selling your home over the holidays can be a little hectic, but it can be a manageable endeavour if you follow these helpful tips.

Be Flexible with Showings

Just like you, home buyers have holiday plans too and their schedules will likely be a little tighter in December. By making yourself available for showings as often as possible, you will get more people through the door and hopefully obtain a faster sale.

Keep Décor Minimal

Potential buyers will expect to see some holiday décor when house hunting in December, but it is important the décor is done minimally. Homebuyers need to be able to picture themselves living in your home, and it makes it a little harder if a lot of personal items are on display. Grandma’s handknit throw in off colours and the homemade crafts that only the parents find “so cute” should be stored away during showings.

Offer Easy Parking

Whether there is snow or not, people don’t like to walk in the cold, and they especially don’t want to search for parking in poor weather. Keep your driveway car free to allow potential buyers the premium spot to park. This starts the showing off on a good foot.

Enhance Curb Appeal

Winter weather can make things a little bleak. Enhancing your curb appeal will greet potential buyers with a warm welcome right from the start. Add a wreath to the front door, turn on the porch light in the evenings, shovel the driveway and porch, and clean up any leaves if your front lawn isn’t covered in snow yet.

Provide Hot Beverages

Even with the easy parking you’ve provided, you should consider setting up a coffee and hot chocolate bar for potential buyers to warm up with. It’s as easy as leaving out the Nespresso or Keurig machine with coffee pods, disposable cups, sugar in a cute bowl, and milk in the fridge. Add a small sign that says, “Help Yourself”, and you’re serving up some serious hospitality to your potential home buyer.

Hire a Cleaner

The holiday season is busy to the say the least, so don’t feel like you need to do this all yourself. Hiring a cleaning service to come a few times in December will help keep your home looking great without you having to break a sweat. Plus, you’re going to clean your home anyways before company comes over, so why not make double use of this service?

Make Time for Festivities

Keep in mind that December tends to be a slower month for home sales, so don’t beat yourself up if traffic is slow. Take the opportunity to enjoy the holiday festivities and know that the new year is only a few weeks away!
