5 Tips to Set Yourself Up for Winter Selling Success

Winter can be one of the trickier seasons to sell a home – the market is typically a little slower, curb appeal isn’t at its best, and you don’t get to flaunt your stellar backyard as a selling feature.

But there are also some perks – fewer houses for sale can mean less competition. And, you can show off your home’s winter-ready features. Prepping your home properly for the season will require a little elbow grease, but taking these steps will go a long way in setting you up for winter selling success. We’ve put together our top five tips to do just that below.

1. Clean your gutters

You know potential buyers will be interested in the condition of your roof, so stay on top of things by cleaning your gutters before the snow falls. This will prevent roof damage and keep pests away.

You can opt to bring in a professional service or take this task on yourself if you’re feeling up to it. You may also want to consider installing gutter guards. These will avoid clogging due to leaves and debris while still allowing water to flow through – and they will serve as another checkmark in your home’s “winter-ready” column.

This step will show that your home is well-maintained and ready for the winter elements. One less thing for your buyers to worry about!

2. Protect your floors

Let’s face it – winter is not kind to your lovely floors. Salt can harm them by scratching and damaging the finish, not to mention the constant clean-up due to snow and slush coming in all the time. And if you’re selling your home, people will be coming in and out a lot.

Messy, scuffed-up floors are not a good look, so get proactive about protecting them and keeping them clean. One way to do this is by placing large indoor and outdoor mats and boot trays wherever people will be accessing your home from outside. Make sure to keep a mop nearby for frequent clean-ups too.

3. Weatherproof doors and windows

Fix any drafts in your home by using vinyl or rubber water stripping to seal windows and doors. Install a sweep if you feel a breeze coming from the bottom of a door – an easy fix!

This will ensure your home is nice and cozy for home tours (because who doesn’t love that?!) and help you save money on your gas bill too. You definitely don’t want potential buyers to feel a draft as they consider making an offer on your home.

4. Check the attic

And don’t forget to tend to your attic! Now is the time to seek out and repair any leaks or issues with your insulation. Look for daylight peeking through cracks, and check for excess moisture, which can lead to mould.

It’s definitely best to deal with any issues as soon as possible, rather than waiting them out. Taking these steps may earn you some extra points during home inspections, too!

5. Focus on curb appeal

Although you’ll need to work harder in the winter to enhance your home’s curb appeal, there are still things you can do. Have shovels on hand so you can quickly clear off your driveway and sidewalk when it snows. Prospective buyers driving by will see that your home is well-cared-for, and your walkways will be safe when they come to view your home.

Keep salt or sand nearby to sprinkle on ice and prevent slips and falls. A pet-friendly variety is always a nice touch.

Lastly, try not to go too wild with holiday decor – subtle touches are your friend this year! Festive decorations are undoubtedly magical, but they may not be everyone’s cup of tea, so it’s best to keep things as neutral as possible.

You’ll also want to tend to tasks like draining and turning off water lines and faucets to avoid frozen pipes and changing your furnace filter to ensure your home makes the best possible first impression on winter buyers.

Prospective buyers are bound to be impressed by your home’s winter readiness. It shows your home is well-maintained and that it will hold up like a dream through the harsher winter months – a definite selling point!
