Good ’Hoods: Best Winnipeg Neighbourhoods for Families With Kids
Are you thinking about moving to Winnipeg? Referred to as “Canada’s Gateway to the West,” this city is known for its cultural diversity (with more than 100 languages and nationalities represented throughout the region) and vibrant arts scene.
Its character neighbourhoods, green spaces and access to outdoor activities make it an ideal pick for families with children. If you and your family are considering becoming Winnipeggers or moving within the city, here are four excellent family-friendly neighbourhoods.
1. River Heights
River Heights is resplendent with beautiful tree-lined streets and character homes. This neighbourhood is centrally located, close to all amenities, and has great schools to choose from nearby for all grade levels.
Known for being neighbourly, it has a true sense of community. It’s not uncommon for people to greet you as you walk your dog around the block or enjoy a leisurely stroll.
Are Mom and Dad looking for something fun to do on date night? (Of course you are, you deserve it!) Pandemic restrictions permitting, you can walk to a local pub or restaurants nearby, such as The Grove, Leopold’s Tavern, or Bonfire Bistro.
On balmy summer days, you can take the kids to the splash pad at Corydon Community Centre or to one of many parks and playgrounds in the area – an ideal way to spend some quality family time.
2. The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater
Bridgwater is a newer neighbourhood connecting several smaller neighbourhoods, including the aptly-named Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lake, Bridgwater Trails, and Bridgwater Centre. It’s got plenty of housing options to choose from, so whether you’re renting, buying your first home, seeking an existing starter home, or wanting a new build, this area has you covered.
This neighbourhood is located in the fast-growing southwest Winnipeg and is close to the University of Manitoba. This large subdivision offers biking and walking trails for active families, and a brand new gym is located right in Bridgwater Centre. It’s also close to IKEA and the outlet malls – how convenient!
3. West Kildonan
Next, let’s check out West Kildonan. An older area in northwest Winnipeg, it has a rich history of new Canadians putting down roots, giving it a multicultural flare and making it easy for newcomers to find a sense of community.
It’s close to all amenities and good schools for any grade level. There are many housing options to choose from here, including beautiful character homes on Scotia Street that back onto the Red River.
Take your kids to Kildonan Park, and in the summer, cool off at the park’s outdoor pool, or have a picnic. If you’re looking for a little culture, you can also catch a play at the open-air Rainbow Stage – no shortage of things to do in this spot!
Located at the east end of Winnipeg, Transcona has everything you need – you’ll rarely have to leave if you don’t want to (homebodies, rejoice!). It has affordable housing for any stage of life, and active families will enjoy hitting the Transcona Trail – a 6.7 km trail that offers numerous activities year-round.
Fun fact: Transcona was its own town for a long time and became part of Winnipeg in 1972.
