Summer heat got your garden down? Here’s how to spruce up your curb appeal for the fall market

Ah, summer. It’s one of the most wonderful times of the year. But while most of us are out soaking up every last moment of these hot summer days, our gardens might not be looking so hot this time of year.

Even though shorter, cooler days are in the not-so-distant future, that doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the trowel (see what we did there?). There is plenty that can be done to freshen up your garden for the fall season. Here are some great ways to create a fall-friendly garden that is certain to boost your home’s curb appeal just in time for the fall market.

Clean things up
It’s time to get tidying! Pull out or prune any plants that have seen better days. Harvest any out-of-season veggies you’ve been growing. Cut back whatever you can and deadhead to your heart’s content!

It’s also a good idea to catch up on weeding. Staying on top of weeds will help your garden thrive and prevent those pesky unwanted visitors from spreading.

A tidy garden is a happy garden! Your hard work will pay off when it comes to maxing out your home’s curb appeal.

Freshen up your soil
Once you’ve cleaned everything up, use a hoe to turn over and break up all the soil around your plants. This will make things look fresh and ensure your soil is better aerated, so water and fertilizer can easily reach the roots.

Save your herbs
Now might be a good time to harvest your herbs before it’s too late. Trim your herb plants to the ground and then dry them out by tying them into bundles and hanging them up.

Alternatively, if your herbs are in little pots, you could choose to bring them indoors before it gets too cold.

Divide and conquer (your plants)
You can opt to divide any of your perennial plants that have become unruly fall is an ideal time to do so. Splitting them into multiple plants will help them grow better.

You can replant these divisions in other parts of your garden, which will rejuvenate its appearance. You could also choose to share them with your friends and family to help them freshen up their gardens too!

Just add mulch
Another great way to revive your garden beds is to add some mulch. This will help shield your garden from further sun damage and keep weeds at bay. Plus, it will give everything an updated, fresh new look.

Keep on watering
Although it may be tempting to slack on your watering duties, we don’t recommend doing so just yet. Continue watering your garden (in the early morning or early evening) to keep it flourishing for as long as possible. But don’t overdo it! Overwatering your garden is not a good idea.

You’ll also want to consider adding compost or fertilizer for extra nutrients to help things thrive. This is the perfect time of year to do so.

Make way for mums
Assess your gardens, window boxes and planters. See what can stay (like healthy greenery) and what’s looking tired (goodbye geraniums!). Then you can begin to incorporate hardier, autumnal plants like succulents, cabbage, kale, black-eyed Susans, and of course, mums! Ornamental peppers and pansies are also great late-season additions.

Not looking to spend a lot? You can likely find some great deals at your local garden centre at this time of year.

And as we get deeper into fall, you can add in more pots of mums (because you can never have too many) and pumpkins to your gardens.

Build a DIY planter box
Have you always dreamt of adding planter boxes to your space? Now just might be the time to make this dream a reality! Take advantage of the cooler weather and build a DIY planter box or raised garden box.

For now, you can fill it with fall foliage, plants, and pumpkins and next spring you’ll have a blank slate for a vegetable garden or a place to plant a plethora of beautiful flowers.

So don’t give up on your garden just yet! A fall garden can be a wonderful thing. Aside from saving you money while providing you healthy and sustainable food options it can go a long way towards boosting your home’s curb appeal.
