3 Home Projects you Now Have the Time to do – and Will Brighten Your Mood too!

April 9, 2020

We all have some nagging home projects in the back of our minds, but we always postpone them because we “don’t have the time”. Perhaps a silver lining of the COVID-19 outbreak is now we have time to complete some home projects since we are all staying home to physically distance ourselves from others.

Although there are countless home projects to tackle, these three will brighten your mood by refreshing your space. Plus, it always feels so good to cross an item or two off your to-do list.

Whether you were looking to refresh existing paint or do a whole home makeover, now is a great time to paint your home while you are at home. Perhaps a bright yellow can brighten everyone’s mood? Or a soothing blue can calm some nerves? Or maybe a neutral is what you need to keep mental clutter at bay? Whichever palette you choose, be sure it complements your existing décor and, most importantly, brings you some joy.

Amidst this health crisis, we are all trying to be healthier. To maintain good air quality, opt for a water-based product that contains zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you select a paint that doesn’t need a primer, you save on more chemicals being added to the walls. Air quality is especially important if you have children or a baby on the way. Remember to open the windows to let fresh air in while you upgrade your walls!

Kitchen Cabinets

Refreshing kitchen cabinets with a new colour and/or hardware can make a dated kitchen feel new again. If you’ve been dreaming of two-toned cabinets or the black hardware trend, why not take this extra time at home to put some of those Pinterest inspo pins to good use?

Refinishing cabinets takes some time; all doors must be removed and they need time to dry before they are reinstalled. Your cupboard interiors will be exposed, which makes it an ideal time to take on this project, since you won’t be having guests over anytime soon. If your kitchen is in shambles for a week, no one will know but you (and the cat)!

Outdoor Space

With Government recommendations to stay home, Canadians are appreciating their outdoor space more than ever. And with the darkness of winter behind us, catching some Vitamin D rays is extra appealing right now.

Perhaps rebuilding a deck or adding one onto your home has been on your wish list. Or laying down new patio stones will complete your space. Do you love to barbeque? Consider building an outdoor kitchen. Customize your backyard to suit your needs and bring you happiness while we are physical distancing.

And if you’re not into doing a big outdoor project right now, just plant some flowers, hostas or shrubs in your garden to brighten your mood. And if you’re feeling a bit more ambitious, plant a vegetable garden to grow your own produce! This is a great opportunity to teach children about where food comes from too.

Working with your hands and being outdoors are proven mood boosters, so stay home but get outside!
