7 Ways to Make Your Backyard Your Happy Place

They say one-third of your life is spent sleeping, and another third is spent in your backyard. Okay, we might have made that last part up, but it is true that we’re spending more time at home than ever before. And as the warmer days descend upon us, it’s time to start thinking about our backyards.

Drive around almost any Canadian neighbourhood and you’ll see that in last year, homeowners have been busily landscaping and gardening, building fences and decks, putting in pools and playgrounds, or perfecting their outdoor barbecue pit. With all of us spending more time at home these days, it seems we’re determined to get more use and enjoyment out of our own backyards.

If you’ve yet to start building your backyard oasis, we’ve compiled a list of tips ranging from tiny touches to bigger-budget ideas to make it a welcome extension of your indoor living space.

1. Up your textile game

An easy way to freshen up your outdoor space is by adding some textiles or replacing any that are sun-bleached or weather-stained (no judgement – we’ve all got a few!). Think pillows, outdoor rugs, and umbrellas for pops of colour, visual interest and of course, comfort.

We suggest heading to Pinterest to get inspired and to gather all your ideas in one place before you get started.

2. Flex that green thumb

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”
– Audrey Hepburn

It’s safe to say we could all use a little extra hope these days. Flowers are an excellent way to infuse happiness into every corner of your backyard! You can go all out with an expensive garden plot, or keep it small with pre-made planters. Some greenhouses even offer curbside pickup options for extra convenience.

An easy hack if you don’t feel like breaking out your foam knee pads just yet is to fill some flower pots and pepper them around your space. You’ll get the same effect but with smaller, more manageable areas to tackle.

3. Bring the park to you

If you have kids, you’re probably all too familiar with the phrase, “I’m bored!” Get your little ones out of the house without leaving home by investing in some fun outdoor areas. Options include swings, a slide, playset, paddling pool, water table, or even something as simple as a bottomless stash of bubbles. These things are relatively easy to set up and are pretty much guaranteed to keep your kids entertained for hours (priceless for parents!). Read on for more tips on how to handle kids while you’re working from home.

4. Feature a fountain

A fountain adds instant ambiance to your backyard. It’s calming to look at and provides a tranquil soundtrack to your outdoor experience. Plus, it has the added benefit of drowning out your not-so-favourite sounds – like your neighbour’s… interesting... music choices.

Other water feature options include a bird bath so you can embrace your inner bird watcher, or a pond if you’re up for some seasonal maintenance and a bigger upfront investment.

5. Create a zen zone

Yoga and meditation are popular pastimes. And what better place to practice them than outside in the sunshine? Pick a peaceful, relaxing spot and accessorize it with blankets and cushions that can be stowed away in stormy weather. You might even create a miniature zen garden with potted plants and some sand for raking! Your soothing fountain (see step 4) will provide the perfect white noise for finding your inner calm.

6. Build a deck (and friends will come)

If your backyard is a little blah, this may just be the time to build (or rebuild) the deck of your dreams. A stylish, not-so-outdoorsy way to enjoy the fresh air, it’ll serve as your go-to spot to sip a coffee in the morning and a glass of wine as you watch the stars come out. You can choose to go pro or DIY it, but try not to cut corners (no pun intended!) as poor workmanship can eventually undo all the love you put into it.

7. Tickle your tastebuds in an outdoor kitchen

Food and fresh air are where it’s at, are we right? Building an outdoor kitchen is the ultimate way to get the most out of your outdoor space. Depending on your budget, you could add an upgraded BBQ, a pizza oven (drool), and a bar and prep area. You may also consider adding a shelter so you can work your magic at the grill come rain or shine.

Once you’ve implemented one or two (or all!) of these ideas, we’re confident your backyard will be one of your very favourite places to spend time.
