Our 2022 Interior Design Forecast: 6 Trends to Watch

Goodbye 2021, hello 2022!

To prepare for an exciting new year ahead, you may be reflecting on the past 12 months, making a few resolutions to better your life and finishing off some pesky tasks you’ve been meaning to cross off your “to do” list.

You may also be wondering how to prepare your home. If you’re keen to find out what interior design trends will look like for the coming year, we’ve got you covered!

Here are 6 interior design trends to watch in 2022.

1. Embrace Sustainability

One of the most prominent trends we’re seeing, and perhaps the most important, is a focus on sustainability. It’s cool to care about the environment, and this is coming through in our homes now too.

This will include an emphasis on sustainable materials, responsible manufacturing, and reusing and reselling furniture and homeware.1 DIY and upcycling projects will continue to be a rising trend – a fun and rewarding way to ensure you’re taking a mindful approach to your interior design efforts.

Vintage pieces will also play a big part in taking on this trend. These treasured finds can add some wonderful and unique touches throughout your home, so don’t hesitate to scoop up any gems you come across!

2. Get Green with Envy

According to the online global marketplace Etsy, green is the colour of the year.2 Etsy favours an emerald green, but grey-green, olive, or sage tones will be on-trend too.

Think green velvet sofas, paint, or rugs to make a big impact. But you could also inject this pleasing hue with pottery, glassware, artwork or cushions if you’re looking for a smaller-scale approach.

3. Invite in More Colour

2022 will be the year of more colour. Gone are the days of all-white everything – it’s time to sprinkle more bright and happy pops of colour throughout your home. Taking on this trend just might provide a mood boost as well, as brighter shades are associated with a naturally uplifting effect.3

This move to a more cheerful colour palette will also make its way to the kitchen, with designers incorporating multiple shades of cabinets, backsplashes and even appliances.4

4. Natural Is in

It’s pretty unanimous – natural fibres and materials are very on-trend for 2022. This goes hand-in-hand with celebrating elevated sustainability in our interior decor, by cutting down on synthetic, less earth-friendly options.

Textured walls and surfaces, vintage textiles, and additions like dried flowers and handmade accent pieces will all help you welcome this trend into your home.

5. Say Hello to Serene Sleeping Spaces

Good sleep is essential, so this next trend is a good one. It’s all about creating the ultimate sleep sanctuary to foster and maintain excellent sleep hygiene.

Here are some quick tips to achieve total bedroom bliss:

  • Invest in luxurious linens
  • Finetune the temperature
  • Cut out any clutter
  • Banish electronics
  • Consider blackout blinds or curtains
  • Bring in essential oils
  • Paint the room in a soothing colour (insert emerald green!)

Sweet dreams!

6. Make Way for Textured Furniture

Another neat trend we’ll see in the new year is an increase in textured furniture. This could look like a statement headboard in a fun fabric (a potential DIY project if you’re game!) or accent furniture pieces like benches or stools covered in fabric.

This will cozy up your space and add some cool conversation pieces too. Just be sure to opt for fabrics that are easy to clean – you’ll thank yourself later.

Whether you decide to take these trends on in a big way or infuse bits and pieces of them throughout your home in the year to come, we’re confident you’ll pull it off flawlessly. Happy New Year!
