5 Easy Tricks to Make a Small Space Feel More Spacious

Whether you’ve moved into a one-bedroom condo, or you’re trying to figure out how to decorate that top-of-the-stairs reading nook, decorating a small space can be challenging. Follow these tips for maximizing space while remaining stylish.

1. Focus on the use of the space

Small spaces are not well-suited to be multi-functional. Choose a function for the space and let that be the focus while decorating. For example, if you’re decorating a reading nook, you wouldn’t consider where to put a TV because a reading nook wouldn’t have one.

2. Hang curtains strategically

Make a space look taller by hanging your curtains properly. Hang your curtains high above the window, at least four-six inches above. Plus, make the most of the height by having your curtains stop just above the floor (less than an inch is perfect).

3. Buy appropriately sized, multi-functional furniture

This is critical to prevent your space from looking cramped. You may fall in love with a four-seater sectional with chaise lounge, but this piece of furniture may overcrowd your space. Be conscious of how much seating and table space you need for the function of the space and stick to that limit.

If the piece of furniture can be multi-purpose, you’re coming out ahead. Think sofas that have storage under the seats and coffee tables with built-in storage.

4. Use the wall space

By keeping items off the floor and on the wall, you are not taking up anymore square footage. Think floating shelves or built-in shelves for décor and books. If you have a green thumb, consider showcasing hanging plants in your small space.

5. Add a mirror

By angling the mirror towards the focal point of the room, it can provide an illusion of depth making the room look larger than it is. Allow the mirror to perform double duty as a room enlarger and piece of art by selecting an interesting frame or shape.

Decorating a small space can be fun and easy. Stick to these tricks, keep the space tidy and clutter-free, and you’ll be well on your way to having a stylish, small space that echoes “cozy” rather than “cramped”.
