Good ’Hoods: Best Calgary Neighbourhoods for Families With Kids

Imagine this: it’s a beautiful sunny day. You’re spending time outside with your family. You hear your kids laughing nearby (one of your favourite sounds), and the afternoon stretches out ahead of you. Later you’ll pop out for a few groceries, grab an ice cream with the kids, or catch up with your neighbours for a playdate. You’ve got scads of options for how to fill the day – all within an easy biking distance so you can get a little exercise and get home in time to start dinner.

Sounds like a dream, right? But when you’re looking for a place for your family to live, only the best neighbourhood will do. We get it. And we’re here to help.

Luckily, Calgary offers plenty of great spots to rear your young brood. In fact, it ranked an impressive fourth place in Reader's Digest’s countdown of the best Canadian cities to raise a family. They cite access to park spaces and public transit, low violent crime rates, and one of the youngest median ages in the country as some of the reasons why it’s so ideal.

Of course, Calgary is a big city, so we’re homing in on three top Calgary neighbourhoods for families with kids.

Lake Bonavista

First up is the (aptly named) lake community, Lake Bonavista. This neighbourhood offers beautiful, tranquil views and plenty of things for active families to do. In the summer you can enjoy swimming and beaches, boating, and fishing. In the winter, head out for skating, hockey, tobogganing, and ice fishing. Your little ones will be busy all year long! This community is made up primarily of single detached homes on large lots – perfect for families!

Up next is the community of Parkdale. This neighbourhood is packed with character and charm – offering small-town vibes with all the amenities of a community that’s close to downtown. It’s also super walkable: you and your family can stroll along Bow River, or visit one of the numerous nearby restaurants. Parkdale is close to schools, shopping, parks (like the very cool, recently-opened Flyover Park), and is a five-minute drive to the downtown core. In short, this neighbourhood really has it all.

Parent and child hiking

Venturing a little outside the city you’ll find our last stop, the town of Cochrane – a popular destination for families. Here you can fully soak in those stunning mountain views (because let’s be honest, who doesn’t want that?). Other highlights include its charming historic downtown and proximity to Banff National Park. Located a convenient 15 to 20-minute drive to Calgary, this community is perfect for families who live a more outdoorsy lifestyle but still desire easy access to all the amenities of the city.
